How Smart Reader handles your family's information

Plain-language summary: Smart Reader reads photos and PDFs out loud on your device. It does not upload your photos, your voice, or what your child reads to any server. This page explains exactly what that means.

Who this policy covers

This policy applies to the Smart Reader Android app (package com.kidsreader.app), published to Google Play. Smart Reader is a reading-assistance app: it scans a photo, PDF page, or camera capture; recognizes the text; and reads it aloud in one of twelve languages, with optional on-device translation and pronunciation practice.

What we don't collect

Smart Reader has no server of its own. There is nothing on the other end of a connection for your photos, recordings, or reading activity to be sent to. Specifically:

Photos and PDF pages you scan are recognized on your device using on-device OCR (ML Kit and Tesseract). They are never uploaded anywhere.
Your voice, captured during pronunciation practice, is processed on-device by an offline speech engine (Vosk). No audio recording ever leaves the device.
Reading activity — which pages you've opened, which languages you use, how many you've read this month — is counted only to enforce your plan's limits, and stays in local app storage on your device.

In short: if you never subscribe, Smart Reader never talks to a network at all beyond fetching an on-device language pack the first time you use a new language.

Permissions we ask for, and why

Permission	What it's for
Camera	To photograph a page you want read aloud. Photos are processed on-device and are not uploaded.
Microphone	To hear you read during pronunciation practice, scored on-device by an offline speech engine. Never recorded to a file or uploaded.
Photos / Storage	To let you pick an existing photo or PDF instead of using the camera, and to save/reopen your own reading sessions.
Internet	Used only for two things: connecting to Google Play Billing when you manage a subscription, and downloading an on-device language pack the first time you translate into a new language.

Subscriptions & purchases

Pro and Premium are annual subscriptions sold and processed entirely by Google Play Billing. Smart Reader never sees or stores your payment details — Google handles the transaction and simply tells the app which plan you're on. Google's own privacy policy governs that billing relationship; see policies.google.com/privacy.

Where your data actually lives

Everything Smart Reader remembers — your saved reading sessions, your chosen languages, your monthly page count — is stored in the app's local storage on your device, using standard Android app storage. Uninstalling the app removes it. Nothing is synced to a cloud account, and Smart Reader has no user accounts or sign-in of its own.

Third-party services we rely on

Smart Reader uses the following components, all of which run their core recognition and translation work on-device:

Google ML Kit (text recognition & translation) — recognition and translation happen on your device; only the one-time download of a language model touches the network.
Tesseract OCR — a fully offline, on-device recognition engine used for scripts ML Kit doesn't cover.
Vosk — a fully offline, on-device speech-recognition engine used for pronunciation practice.
Google Play Billing — handles subscription purchases, as described above.

Smart Reader does not include any advertising or analytics software, and does not sell or share data with data brokers or advertisers.

Children's privacy

Smart Reader is designed to be used by children with a parent or guardian's involvement, particularly when choosing a subscription. Because the app collects no personal information, shows no advertising, and does not allow children to communicate with anyone or share content publicly, there is no mechanism by which a child's personal information could be collected, stored, or disclosed by this app.

Parents and guardians should supervise in-app purchases, as with any paid app or subscription.

Your choices

Because nothing leaves your device, most familiar "data rights" requests (access, export, deletion) are already in your hands:

Delete everything the app has stored: uninstall the app, or clear its storage from Android Settings → Apps → Smart Reader → Storage.
Manage or cancel a subscription: through Google Play → Subscriptions, at any time.
Revoke a permission: Android Settings → Apps → Smart Reader → Permissions, at any time; the relevant feature (camera capture, voice practice, etc.) simply won't work until re-granted.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes in a way that affects what we collect or how we use it, we'll update the "Last updated" date above and, for material changes, note it in the app's update notes on Google Play.
